Es gibt eine Fülle an Werken zur Theoriengeschichte des Faches. Empfehlenswert sind die auch von Thomas Hylland Eriksen zitierten Arbeiten von Barnard (2000) und Barth et al. (2005). Die meisten älteren Werke (bis zum Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts) sind nach dem Erlöschen des Urheberrechts im Volltext online verfügbar (etwa auf archive.org[1] oder books.google.com[2]). Übersichtliche theoriegeschichtliche Kurzdarstellungen bieten auch die am Institut für Kultur- und Sozialanthroplogie erstellten Lernunterlagen "Einführung in die empirischen Methoden der Kultur- und Sozialanthropologie"[3] sowie "Qualitative Methoden der Kultur- und Sozialanthropologie"[4].
